About us

Conceived in 2004, Madpoetix began as a simple idea: to create a platform where artists could sharpen their tools and be encouraged to pursue their art full-time. Over the years, through productions like The Art of Performing Aural Sex, Soirée Intimes, and The Phenomenal 5IVE, we’ve witnessed that mandate come to life, with countless artists launching their careers from our stage.

The Past (2004-2019):

A Stage Takes Shape

Madpoetix was conceived in a Montreal living room in 2004 by Kym Dominique-Ferguson and fellow poets. After officially launching in 2007 with the inaugural Art of Performing Aural Sex, the company evolved into a vital hub for Montreal’s spoken word scene.

What began as a training platform for young artists soon gave rise to iconic events: the intimate Soirée Intimes open mic, the competitive MadSlam, and groundbreaking theatrical productions like the one-man show Born Jamhaitianadian and The Phenomenal 5IVE. For over a decade, our stage unintentionally fulfilled its original mandate, serving as the launchpad for artists who have gone on to win awards, build businesses, and shape the cultural landscape.

Building a Legacy for Montreal’s Artists

Madpoetix was always meant to become a school of sorts—a permanent, supportive home for artistic development. We are now on a clear path to make that a reality.

Secure operational funding and transition to a charitable organization.

Restart our monthly showcase series and major annual productions.

Host the first annual Madpoetix Fundraising Gala & Awards Ceremony.

Purchase and refurbish a building to house performance spaces, artist studios, and residency apartments.

Establish named scholarships for BIPOC artists in visual arts, dance, literature, music, and theatre, honoring cultural pillars like James Baldwin and Ethel Bruneau.

The Present & Future:

A New Chapter

Since 2019, we have been in a period of strategic development, shifting from a side hustle to building a sustainable, full-time artistic institution. Informed by years of grant writing and jury experience, and backed by a new, expert Board of Directors, Madpoetix is now poised for its most impactful era. We are returning to our foundational dream with clarity and purpose. Section 2: Our Vision & Roadmap
